Coffered Ceiling of Santa Maria in Aracoeli

This lavish wooden coffered ceiling (c. 1570s), richly gilded and painted, celebrates the naval victory at Lepanto (1571), a triumph attributed to the Virgin’s intercession. Commissioned under Pope Gregory XIII, it merges political and spiritual symbolism, while exemplifying late Renaissance decorative grandeur in one of Rome’s oldest basilicas.
