Hellenistic Hero from Behind
This bronze statue, seen from behind, reveals the powerful back and relaxed contrapposto of a Hellenistic-style youth (3rd–1st cc. BC). The figure’s weight sinks into one leg as he leans on a spear, while his other hand rests loosely behind him—a pose derived from Lysippos’s athletic heroes. The mottled green and red patina reflects centuries of burial and corrosion, giving the surface a painterly texture. The commanding stance and idealized musculature suggest a prince or elite Roman modeled on Greek prototypes, blending political authority with classical beauty.
