Dormition of the Virgin Relief

This Gothic (late 15th c.) relief shows Mary’s peaceful death, or Dormition, surrounded by apostles. A key theme in late medieval piety, it reflected the Virgin’s role as protector. For Riga’s Great Guild, it symbolized divine patronage over commerce, prosperity, and the city’s Christian identity.
