This vault fresco (1484–86) in the Bufalini Chapel shows the Four Evangelists seated in the cross-vault with their symbolic creatures. The composition follows models by Perugino, a leading Umbrian painter active in Rome. Pinturicchio’s sharper contours and animated poses demonstrate his emerging independence and secure his status in the competitive Roman milieu.
