The marble arch marks the resting place of Raphael (1520), whose burial fulfilled his wish to lie in the ancient Pantheon. Its Latin epitaph, composed by Rafael's friend Cardinal Pietro Bembo, reads ILLE HIC EST RAPHAEL TIMVIT QVO SOSPITE VINCI RERVM MAGNA PARENS ET MORIENTE MORI (Here lies Raphael; while he lived, Nature feared defeat, and when he died, she feared to die).
