Festive Procession

This Roman opus sectile panel (early 4th c.) from the Basilica of Junius Bassus on the Esquiline Hill shows a vivid procession of figures bearing offerings, torches, and vessels. Made from marble, glass, and mother-of-pearl, it reflects the luxury of late-Imperial art. The basilica belonged to Junius Bassus, a Roman senator and consul (331), whose patronage signaled elite status, cultural refinement, and the blending of Greek and Roman motifs into a display of ritual abundance.
