Bacchus
This 2nd-c. mosaic depicts Bacchus, the god of wine, fertility, and rebirth, adorned with ivy and grapes. Bacchus symbolizes liberation and the ecstatic forces of nature. Found in a a Roman villa, the mosaic highlights Bacchus’s cultural significance in Roman society, where wine and revelry were central to religious and social life, seen as the divine connection between humanity and nature.
