José Antonio Anzoátegui with Military Medals
This 19th-c. print portrays General José Antonio Anzoátegui (1789–1819), a hero of South American independence. Decorated with two crosses of valor, he served as Bolívar’s chief of the Honor Guard and played a decisive role in the Battle of Boyacá. He died prematurely at 30, immortalized as a symbol of patriotic sacrifice.
