This early 19th-c. portrait honors General José Antonio Anzoátegui (1789–1819), a brilliant Venezuelan patriot and Bolívar’s chief of the Honor Guard. His valor at Boyacá helped secure Colombia’s independence. He died at 30 in Pamplona, remembered as a martyr of the liberation cause.
