Saint Anthony as Military Captain

This statue of Saint Anthony, housed in the Santo Antônio da Barra Fort, was symbolically promoted to the rank of captain in 1705. Venerated for aiding Bahia’s defense against the Dutch, the saint was honored with an annual stipend paid to the Franciscan convent, blending faith, protection, and colonial military tradition.
