Greek Athletes on Attic Vase
This Attic vase (c.530–500 BC) shows two athletes in training, one striking with a stick while the other raises an arm in defense. Likely linked to the pankration, a brutal contest combining wrestling and boxing, the scene reflects Greek ideals of strength, skill, and discipline. Athletic imagery on pottery reinforced the civic and ritual importance of gymnasia in Greek society.
