Celestial Dancers
Two gilded kinnara figures (19th c.), half-human and half-bird, move across a dark ground, their feathered tails and wings defined by fine linework. In Buddhist and Hindu traditions, kinnara embody music, love, and protective benevolence. In Southeast Asia they often appear in pairs, expressing ideals of loyalty and mutual devotion. Their poised gestures and courtly dress here affirm their status as celestial dancers who model refined beauty and harmonious conduct.
