Amatetéhuitl Chest Ornament

This rare Mexica chest ornament (15th–16th cc.) formed part of offerings linked to Tlāloc. The piece uses amate paper (ficus cotinifolia) shaped into layered bands, twisted rosettes, yauhtli flowers, and blue-painted cotton tubes. Known as amatetéhuitl, it marked divine fertility and supported rituals calling for rain and agricultural abundance.
