Diquís Harpy Eagle Pendants and Metal Alloys
These gold pendants (700–1550 AD) from southern Costa Rica depict stylized harpy eagles, symbols of vision, strength, and spiritual flight. Each object’s copper content is indicated, ranging from 1.4% to 78%, reflecting diverse alloying techniques. The varying compositions reveal the Diquís mastery of metallurgy and its symbolic use of color, durability, and luminosity.
