Fallen Beasts
This Assyrian relief panel (645–635 BC) from Nineveh depicts lions falling under a barrage of arrows. Each lion’s pose—writhing, gasping, or still—intensifies the scene. The dignified portrayal of the defeated lions magnifies King Ashurbanipal’s power, presenting him as a master over nature’s fiercest creatures. The artwork reflects the king’s might and the cultural significance of the lion hunt as a symbol of royal authority and dominance.
