Basse-Yutz Flagon with Guardian Dogs
This bronze flagon from Basse-Yutz, France (c. 450 BC) concentrates its ornament around the lid, where three snarling dog heads encircle a disc once inlaid with red enamel. The upright hound gripping the chain forms the handle, its body merging into the rim. Such animal guardians typify early Celtic La Tène art with its fluid silhouettes and alert creatures. The flagon’s blend of Celtic forms and Mediterranean metalwork reflects the exchange networks shaping Iron Age Europe.
