Coat of Arms of Riga

This 16th-c. wooden relief depicts the coat of arms of Riga, granted in 1221. The two towers and open gate symbolize the city’s autonomy and strength, while crossed keys above reference St Peter, Riga’s patron saint. Such emblems affirmed municipal identity and legal privilege.
