Peristyle of the House of the Fortuna Annonaria

This courtyard (3rd c.) features black and white vegetal mosaics framed by spiral-fluted marble columns and brick walls. It formed the peristyle (columned courtyard) of a wealthy house in Ostia, opening onto surrounding rooms. The central niche was dedicated to Fortuna Annonaria, linked to the grain supply. Its decoration indicates both the owner’s prosperity and the city’s dependence on maritime trade in foodstuffs.
