Drain Cover
This square stone drain cover (2nd c.) shows a central round opening framed by four leaf-shaped perforations within a recessed border. It formed part of the covered channels serving the commercial area of Ostia, where runoff and wastewater were directed toward larger sewers. The patterned cutouts increased flow capacity while trapping larger debris, demonstrating Roman attention to both function and durable street surfaces.
