Cistern beneath the Caupona and Fountain

This brick-vaulted underground chamber (2nd c.) opens behind a framed entrance, with a narrow shaft leading down into darkness. As a cistern connected to a public fountain and nearby caupona (tavern), it formed part of Ostia’s pressurized water network. Its hidden yet central position shows how Roman urban planning integrated hydraulic storage into everyday commercial life.
