This rare half-length marble sculpture (1280–1284) once adorned the south transept of Pisa Cathedral. It captures an intimate exchange between Mary and the Christ Child, whose gazes meet in tender dialogue. Pisano’s expressive realism marked a shift toward emotional depth in medieval sculpture.
