Façade of San Michele in Foro
Framed by narrow alleys, the Romanesque façade (11th–14th cc.) of San Michele rises in tiers of arcades and sculpted columns. Topped by Archangel Michael, sword drawn, it dramatizes the triumph of good over evil. The ornate screen conceals a humble church behind, embodying Lucca’s blend of civic display and quiet devotion.
