St Jerome WritingCaravaggio
This painting (1605–06) shows Jerome, the Church Father, translating scripture with pen and book while a skull rests before him as a reminder of mortality. Draped in red, he embodies both sacred authority and human frailty. Caravaggio’s stark chiaroscuro heightens the tension between learning and death, presenting study itself as a spiritual act and a meditation on eternity.
