Concarneau Walled Town
The 14th-c. Ville Close of Concarneau, expanded in the 17th under Sébastien Vauban, rises on an island in the harbor. Its granite ramparts, clock tower, and bridge once secured one of Brittany’s key fishing ports. Vauban, the Sun King’s master engineer, fused geometry and terrain to modernize defenses. Today its walls and tides reflect centuries of seafaring, trade, and civic pride.
