Concarneau Walled Town
The Ville Close of Concarneau, rising from the harbor on a fortified island, was begun in the 14th c. and reinforced in the 17th c. under Vauban. Its granite walls, towers, and drawbridge once guarded a key fishing and trading hub on Brittany’s coast. Today the ramparts and streets preserve the memory of a maritime town where defense and commerce shaped identity.
