Max Beneath the Ceiling of the Great Hall
This painted ceiling (c. 1590) features Mannerist grotesques, exotic fauna, and Christian emblems such as the IHS monogram. Located in colonial Tunja, it integrates Renaissance styles with New World imagery. The artwork demonstrates how early Spanish elites used art to convey power, piety, and control over nature, reflecting their cultural and religious influence in the Americas.
