The Tong of Shame
This iron clamp (17th c.) immobilized or crushed the tongue of those accused before inquisitorial courts. Originating in Spain and used in colonial Cartagena, it targeted people labeled heretical, blasphemous, or defiant. Its simple mechanism shows how control of the body served to police speech and enforce both religious and imperial authority.
