Anna Nery and Six Orphans
This photograph (1870) shows Anna Nery, Brazil’s pioneering nurse, with six orphaned girls she rescued during the Paraguayan War (1864–70). After volunteering on the front, she returned home with the children, embodying compassion and national duty. Her work earned her lasting recognition as a symbol of Brazilian humanitarian service.
