Sutton Hoo Silver Bowls with Cross Motifs

These shallow silver bowls (6th–7th cc.) were found stacked together in the Sutton Hoo ship burial in England. Likely made in the eastern Mediterranean, they bear stamped crosses and other Christian motifs. Their presence in an Anglo-Saxon royal tomb reflects long-distance exchange networks and the early prestige of Mediterranean Christianity in early medieval England, where such imports signaled status, connection, and emerging religious influence.
