King Herod Relief from the Magdeburg Gates
This bronze relief from the Magdeburg Gates of St Sophia Cathedral features biblical scenes, including King Herod, in a Romanesque style. Expressive faces and intricate patterns merge Western European and Byzantine influences. The gates (11th–12th cc.) rank among Russia’s oldest metal artworks, likely brought from Sigtuna, Sweden, as war booty after a Rus’ raid in 1187.
