St George
This icon (late 11th–12th cc.) ranks among the oldest surviving Russian images of St George. The saint appears in a waist-length pose, following Byzantine conventions for military martyrs. He holds a spear or raises his hand in blessing, affirming his role as heavenly warrior and intercessor. The panel marks an early stage in the Novgorod school, when Byzantine models still strongly shaped local iconography.
