Crucifixion with the Passions in the Margins

This icon (mid-16th c.) centers the Crucifixion within a border of small Passion scenes that trace Christ’s final days in chronological order. Each vignette uses compact gestures and bright color blocks to isolate key moments such as the Betrayal, the Mocking, and the Descent into Hell. The gold ground marks the entire cycle as sacred history rather than lived time. Installed on an iconostasis, such panels shaped how worshippers approached the Eucharist, presenting the whole drama of salvation in a single, ordered field of images.
