Athlete with Strigil

This black-and-white mosaic (c. 110 AD) from the Terme di Porta Marina depicts a nude athlete holding a strigil, an instrument used for scraping sweat and oil after exercise. Such scenes emphasized the gymnasium role of the baths and reflected ideals of Roman bodily care, strength, and hygiene.
