The Triumph of Death (detail)Buonamico Buffalmacco
This fresco detail (1336–41) shows a crowded group of naked figures twisted in torment, their bodies gripped by serpents against a dark, reddish ground. Painted on the cemetery wall at Pisa, it forms part of a larger cycle on death and judgment that shaped visitors’ meditation on the afterlife. The exposed bodies and labeled sins turn doctrine into a vivid warning against persistent vice.
