The Original Sin and the Expulsion from ParadiseJan II Brueghel
This vibrant allegory (1640-50) unites two foundational episodes from Genesis: the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve, and their expulsion from Eden. Surrounded by a profusion of animals, the couple’s transgression disturbs the harmony of creation. The detailed fauna evoke a lost paradise, while God’s red-robed figure emphasizes divine judgment and the moral rupture of sin.
