Hermits in a Rocky LandscapeJan Brueghel the Elder
In this secluded wilderness (c. 1605), monks occupy caves and rough shelters scattered among steep rocks and dense foliage. A natural stone bridge arches across the ravine, visually linking the two sides of the landscape. Figures absorbed in prayer or reading withdraw into shadowed corners, so that human presence appears fragile beside the towering terrain, underscoring early Baroque interest in contemplative life within overwhelming nature.
