Coastal LandscapePaul Bril
This coastal landscape by Paul Bril (c. 1600) opens onto a wide bay framed by rocky cliffs, ruined towers, and a busy harbor with boats and tiny staffage figures. Clear light recedes toward a distant headland, while dark clouds gather above the foreground rocks and trees. Bril combines meticulous Northern detail with an Italianate, idealized seascape, using atmospheric perspective to guide the eye deep into space.
