This gilded copper statue of the Virgin Mary (1774) stands on the pinnacle of the cathedral’s highest spire. Created by Giuseppe Bini, it became a focus of Marian devotion and civic pride for the city. By municipal rule it long fixed the maximum building height, so its shining figure functioned as both sacred landmark and vertical measure of Milan.
