Tomb of Ilaria del CarrettoJacopo della Quercia
This marble tomb (1406–08) honors Ilaria del Carretto, wife of Lucca’s lord Paolo Guinigi, who died at 26. A pinnacle of early Renaissance sculpture, it blends Gothic grace with classical revival. Ilaria lies serenely with a dog at her feet symbolizing fidelity. Putti with garlands adorn the sides, evoking ancient Roman motifs.
