Isola Madre
Isola Madre, the largest of the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore, is known for its serene, almost secret atmosphere. Owned by the Borromeo family since the 16th century, it has grown from a rocky outcrop into a refined retreat, admired by travellers since at least the 19th century. The island’s history remains visible in its architecture and careful layout, reflecting centuries of aristocratic taste and experimentation with the landscape.
Today visitors wander through an English-style botanical garden created in the early 1800s, where exotic trees, flowering shrubs and citrus recall its past as orchard and lemon grove. The mild lakeside climate lets rare species flourish, offering colour and fragrance in every season. Paths link shaded corners and panoramic terraces over the water, inviting an unhurried visit that blends horticultural interest, historic charm and the quiet pleasure of nature.
