Christ Crowned with ThornsLionello Spada
This work (1615–1620) captures Christ’s torment as he endures the crown of thorns. The stark chiaroscuro intensifies the contrast between divine patience and human cruelty, while the soldier’s aggression heightens the scene’s violence. Spada, active in the Baroque milieu of Bologna and Rome, fused Caravaggesque realism with emotive pathos to invite reflection on sacrifice and redemption.
