A Persian Warrior and A Greek Hoplite

This Alexander Sarcophagus relief (late 4th c. BC) from the tomb of Abdalonymus, King of Sidon, shows a Greek hoplite (right) clashing with a Persian warrior. Hoplites were heavily armed infantrymen of the Greek city-states, bearing helmets, spears, and large round shields called hoplons. Their disciplined phalanx formations made them central to Greek warfare.
