Alexander the Great Receiving the Semen of Amun-Ra

This relief from Thebes (late 4th c. BC) shows Alexander the Great presenting offerings to Amun-Ra in his form as Kamutef, Bull of His Mother. The god’s ithyphallic pose and the vessel beneath him indicate the collection of semen, a sign of self-generating fertility. Kamutef embodies a creator whose potency renews both gods and kingship, so Alexander’s worship asserts his divine sonship and ties his rule to Egyptian concepts of cosmic order.
