Cape Dutch Dining Room with Shortened Table Legs
This early 19th-c. Cape Dutch dining room shows a table with deliberately shortened legs—a common practice of the time. Families often sat on low stools or directly on the floor, and cutting table legs reduced the need for tall chairs. It also helped retain warmth in winter, as dining closer to the hearth or floor minimized exposure to cold air in drafty homes.
